Like watching daytime television; the experience of walking down Hammersmith's King Street has always been an interesting one. Once described as THE place to be rehoused, we spend the start of a Monday evening wandering down past the Pizza Hut and various charity shops on the hunt for an urban myth, a legend, a story passed on from person to person but never believed.

Having moved to London over two years ago I'd heard tales of a gay pub in the area I was staying, Hammersmith. I never believed it. It's not listed - anywhere. Only few cached references on Google hinted that the fable may indeed have some element of truth. It exists. Or at least did. Once. Long ago. For a week.

But no - we found it. It does exist. "The Hope and Anchor" is a fairly nice affair, complete with a beer garden and a pool table. Located just off King Street, it's quite a homely affair - very local.

There is Hope (and anchor)!

We (them that did set up this site) moved from a small city in Scotland, called Dundee, about two years ago. For those unfamiliar with Dundee it's located one hour North of Edinburgh and boasts some of the most impressive toilet and refuse facilities in the whole of Britain. Like all (we think at this stage) cities in the UK it has a Gay scene which, albeit small, is sufficient.

But visitors to the city would be hard pressed to find it. Indeed the only gay nightclub in the city is painted black, buried into the side of an old dole office, with no signs or posters. A singular door is the only indicator of its existence - I'm tempted to compare it to the leaky cauldron from Harry Potter - but juvenile minds may find an entendre in that so I'll refrain.

Door! We're open! Unless we're closed.

No adverts, no websites, hardly anything on the internet except footnotes and decade old listings on long abandoned websites. But this is understandable. This city isn't alone. The gay scene for most small cities surely caters for the local populace who inherently know of the scenes existence. Somehow. Doesn't it?

Well, no. I didn't know the club existed my first few years in the city. Nor did my friends. Nor did their friends. Their families. Their pets. Their pets’ victims. As if it had been erased from memory. George Orwell would have been proud.

But I'm being unfair. I'm in London now. The days of feeding copies of Boyz into the air extractor at 3am in a Dundee nightclub are gone. This is the city of clubs for all sorts. Pubs for any mood. Quiet, busy, trendy, fetish, everything.

And everything's easy to find. The internet is a hustle bustle of up-to-date and accurate information providing listings to plan your night outs with. Okay, I'm wrong again.

There are some very nice websites. Time Out has an entire section dedicated to the Gay scene. But, like most other sources, it contains huge gaps. And this is only for London. If you check up on any city online looking for the Gay scene you’ll find the results sparse and not usually helpful. Events long since closed. Dead links. Huge amounts of information on the big clubs, little on anything else.

So we thought “let’s make a website which covers the whole of Gay UK and, you know, people can interact with it and you know...”. We've decided to compile a full database for the whole of the UK. Listing everything. EVERYTHING. We've mentioned this to a few people we know and so far the feedback has been favourable:

"Get a job"

"Why bother?"

"It's not the worst idea I've ever heard"

“You have too much time on your hands”

"Wow! Nice boots!"

“You’re an idiot and you owe me a fiver”

Armed with positive criticism we are endeavouring on a journey which, we hope, will drag us to every city in the UK to find out what’s there for a homo night out.

But let’s start small.

We've trawled the internet trying to get the email addresses and websites of as many gay pubs and clubs as we can find. We're going to email them. All of them. With a simple message. We exist, do you?

Go go!
